The National Cabinet Office released the population figures of Spanish municipalities last week, resulting from the municipal census recorded at January 1, 2010.

The figures showed that there are a total of 8,370,975 people registered in Andalusia, with a growth of 0.8 per 100 over the previous year. In Malaga, the figure is 1,609,557, up 1% on the same date last year. In Spain there are 47,021,031 registered voters, 0.6 percent more than in 2009.

The official population figures for each of the Spanish municipalities will be released by the National Institute of Statistics, following their confirmation by royal decree, when they will be published in the Official Gazette of the State, through its website.

By provinces, on 1 January Sevilla had a total of 1,917,097 registered voters, 0.9 percent more than last year, Malaga, 1,609,557, up 1 percent; Cadiz, 1,236,739 registered voters, 0.5 percent more than in 2009, and Granada, 918,072 inhabitants, a 1, 2 percent increase on last year.

Cordoba is the fifth largest province by population, with 805,108 registered voters, but it’s the slowest growing population, just 0.1 percent more than in 2009. In Almería there are now 695,560 registered voters, an increase of 1.6 percent, in Jaén, 670,761 inhabitants, 0.1 percent; and Huelva, 518,081 registered voters, 0.9 percent more than in 2009.

These figures will help determine whether to increase the number of councilors in a number of municipalities or to transfer provincial deputies from one region to another.

Also last week the Cabinet authorised a budget to the Ministry of Interior of 14,750,000 euros for the recruitment of necessary staff and services for the provisional ballot and other ancillary services in connection with the forthcoming local elections.
