Divers were sent to inspect the hull of a cargo ship that ran aground on the beach of Almayate, Málaga.

The container ship “K Wave” became stranded some 200 metres off the shore, after a potential fault with the vessel´s GPS navigation system.

The 133 metre long ship, which carries a UK flag and registration, had departed from the port of Algeciras on Monday evening en route to Valencia, having started this leg of the journey in Lisbon. She was carrying 274 containers, five of which are classified as “dangerous”, containing goods such as paint, chlorine and carbon powder.

Bad weather had hampered the salvage operation but that allowed time for a tug boat “Clara Campoamor” to be sent from Cartagena to assist in dragging the ship back out to sea. Another tug boat named “Ursus” was already on the scene and working to keep the ship stable.
