The subject will be “Peter the Great” and is to be held in the Hall of the Ark Christian Fellowship, at Las Rampas, Fuengirola on Monday 28 March 2011.

The talk will be given by Chris Beckett, who will tell us about the life of one of Russia’s most universally respected rulers – Peter the Great. He was in the forefront of creating the Strong Modern Russia, as we know it today!

He was a tall man (6′ 8”) who had several marriages and some 14 children. He initially became Tsar in 1682 and was made Emperor of All Russia in 1721 and during that time he created Russia as a great Maritime Nation, as well as having a large Army.

Also he was well remembered for reforming and modernising the social structure of Russia, including a more appropriate Tax system. However he caused some fury when he tried to tax men’s “beards” after they refused to shave them off, as he had ordered.

Why did he open up Russia and create Saint Petersburg as his capital of Russia in 1712?

Last Month’s lecture had to be postponed at the very last moment, due the unexpected illness of our speaker Liz Cochrane.

The Committee sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to our many friends and supporters who turned up for the event on 28th February.

The Committee are, however pleased to announce that the lecture will now take place at the end of November 2011. So we can then find out what happened to El Greco’s challenges!

Doors open at 16.00 and the talk will commence at 16.30

Attendance is free to members, and a small charge of five euro’s is charged to non-members. These talks are for you to really enjoy, and to give you an opportunity to meet like-minded people. All are very welcome to attend.
