When two British women were about to dine a restaurant in Marbella, they were relaxed and ready to enjoy an evening of relaxation, unaware that they were about to be part of a rather unusual crime.

Having placed their bags on the floor, by a chair, in not the most secure manner, one of the women discovered that her bag had gone missing, which coincided with two well dressed men having left the restaurant.

Police were immediately informed of the theft of the bag and the contents which were a large amount of cash, a mobile phone and other valuables, including a pendant that held an expensive diamond.

Typical of a distraction theft like this, where the owner of the valuables becomes complacent and leaves them in an insecure manner, only to be identified by opportunistic thieves, the alleged perpetrators were nowhere to be found.

However, some time later, at a routine check point, police officers stopped a vehicle with four occupants, all of whom were known to the police and had criminal records. Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers found a handbag and valuables that matched a description circulating of the items that were stolen in the earlier incident.

One officer then spotted one of the vehicle occupants putting his hand to his mouth, as if to place something inside. As all of the valuables were accounted for, except for the precious gem, the officer thought that the man may have swallowed the diamond.

Officers then arrested the man and took him straight to a medical centre where he was X-rayed, which revealed the diamond in his stomach. The man then admitted to have having swallowed the item.

Police were fortunate to locate these items, but advice is always to never leave your valuables lying around and always be aware of your surroundings. Most crimes of this nature are opportunistic and can be avoided if the opportunities are not presented to those seeking to benefit.
