During times of financial crisis, it is important for everybody to tighten our belts and look for other potential money earners, but the Spanish city of Antequera near Malaga has raised a few eyebrows by putting a street cleaning tax in place to clear up after weddings.
On the one hand, savings can now be made as the mayor of the town, Manuel Barón of the Partido Popular announced a cut in the cost of civil registry from 92€ to just 60€ per couple. However, newlyweds will be charged a security deposit of between 20€ and 30€, to ensure that no confetti, rice, chickpeas or other traditional wedding shower celebratory materials are left littering the streets.
The deposit will be returned to the couple once an inspection has been carried out and the streets are proven to be clean.
The new tax ordinance was put before the council for implementation next year and sought to charge only for the public services that are used. The main opposition party, the PSOE, abstained from the vote, whilst the IU voted against the notion.
