Once again during the month of November and up to Christmas The Diabetic Support Group (Affiliated to the La Cala Lions) will be holding various events to raise awareness about this condition which affects so many people nowadays. The numbers being diagnosed are rising alarmingly and our awareness programme is designed to let people know how to prevent or cope with this problem.

Every year the International Diabetes Federation organizes a special day as World Diabetes Day. This year it was celebrated on November 14, 2011 around the world with many buildings being lit in blue to show solidarity and every country is holding their own events to encourage equal rights for diabetics for example with medical care, insurance cover and even driving, sport and employment discrimination.

On 15th November The Diabetic Support Group held a meeting at Lux Mundi to discuss diabetes.

Future events are planned as follows:

El Cortes Ingles Fuengirola on Friday 18th November at 10 a.m. with talks by various members of the store, breakfast, coffee break and lunch at 12 euros per head.

This will be held in the top floor restaurant and booking is essential . Please telephone Anne Bowles on 607 879 450.

Sunday 20th November The La Cala Lions Christmas Fayre at the Hotel Tamisa Golf at 11.30 a.m. Free glucose testing available.

Friday 25th November – Diabetic Support Group meeting at the Ark Centre in Las Rampas with guest speakers on endocrinology. 10.30 a.m. for 11 a.m.start.

Saturday 26th November and Sunday 27th November the Over 50 Show in Estepona from 11 am until 6 p.m. each day. The Diabetic Support Group will have their own stand there with nurses and nutrition advice as well as free testing for blood pressure and glucose levels.

There will also be a special event at Xanit hospital in the Foyer where patients and visitors can be tested for diabetes. Date to be advised.

We do hope that you will take advantage of these events. During our last year’s campaign we discovered several members of the public who needed to be referred to their doctors as their glucose levels were high. They of course had no idea so it was gratifying to know we may have helped someone keep their health in check.

If you would like to find out more about diabetes – or wish to become involved in this awareness programme – contact Anne and Frank Bowles on 952 46 41 84 or go to our website www.lacaladiabetics .com or for more information about the World Diabetes Day go to the International Diabetic Federation website.

Your help and interest is essential to our campaign! Maybe we can have an event in your bar or restaurant or club house?
