In conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the central government delegation in Almeria has said that it will begin it’s food distribution for the second phase of the Food Distribution Plan on 1 October. The announcement was made last week by Andrés García Lorca, on a visit to the facilities of the Food Bank, located in Roquetas de Mar.
In this second phase, around 800,000 pounds of food will be distributed throughout Almeria under the auspices of 189 charities, and with the collaboration of the Spanish Red Cross and the Food Bank. The direct beneficiaries of these foods will be over 60,000 people, many of whom have already been identified.
Throughout Spain, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, has already started supplying 25,000 tons of food products to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks and the Spanish Red Cross, which in turn is distributing to nearly 9,000 charities, and reaching more than 2,000,000 people.
This distribution programme corresponds to the second phase of the 2012 plan, the delivery of which is scheduled to begin next October 1. Foods that are being provided include olive oil, rice, infant cereal, canned tuna, canned fruit, biscuits, canned green beans, fresh milk, UHT milk, lentils, pasta, baby food, tomato sauce and fruit juices.
Andrés García Lorca, a Government deputy in the province of Almería, was accompanied during his visit to the Food Bank by the head of the Agriculture and Fisheries Unit, José Carlos Herrera, as well as Juan Azorin, president of the Food Bank; Manuel Gonzalez, vice president, and Food Bank secretary Manuel Arqueros.
