MOJACAR BEACH CLEAN-UP/LIMPIEZA PLAYAS 23/09/2012

Since the activity is being carried out in the area of the beach bars, all of these have offered to join in and collaborate with this event

This Sunday 23rd September, “Mojácar se Mueve” have organized a beach cleaning activity to complement the environmental awareness campaign “All you should leave behind are your footprints”

This campaign started early this summer when 10 sign posts were installed at beach access areas of the local beach bars, reminding users to clean up after their visit and the correct use of these areas. This initiative was supported by a strong campaign via social networks and Spanish and English media.

So to complement this initiative, we plan to start the cleaning activity at “El Cantal” beach area, as we believe this to be one of the worst areas, as this is where a large amount of tourists have decided to enjoy their beach days this past summer due to the proximity to the beach bars. This area has also been affected by the “botellon” and adding to the fact that the machine that cleans most of the beaches cannot access this area.

This activity is mostly about creating awareness of a problem that would be non-existent if people were more conscious of their negative effect by not cleaning up after themselves. As we know that in reality this job requires a thorough clean by a professional team, but still, we think the best way to start making an impact and change of consciousness is working with children.

The event will start at 11 am on Sunday at El Patio, where children will be supplied with the necessary materials for starting the clean-up, gloves, containers etc. It will be organized like a game and they will concentrate mostly on collecting cigarette ends which are actually the most difficult for the machines to clean up and are present all over the beaches.

Each plastic cup full of cigarette butts collected will be exchanged for a voucher-reward for the effort and collaboration, this voucher can be exchanged at any of the following bars: El Cid will provide ice cream; AKU-AKU will provide soft drinks and Pachamama beer for the adults. At the end of the activity there will be a snack for the children provided by El Patio.

Since the activity is being carried out in the area of the beach bars, all of these have offered to join in and collaborate with this event, as well as most local establishments who are more than willing to help with this activity.

All participants will also be rewarded a free game of Mini Golf once the activity has finished at Mojacar’s Mini golf, meanwhile the grown-ups are invited to a plate of paella.

Older children who can work a bit harder and collect more litter will be rewarded with vouchers for free ten pin bowling games thanks to Ozone Bowling Mojácar.

While the smaller children are collecting with adults supervising, other groups of adults can also do some cleaning by collecting larger objects, like bottles, bags, cups, plastic straws, etc.

The day before, on Saturday 22nd , the Mojácar Diving club are also carrying out an underwater clean-up event in the same area so the two activities are joined with the same purpose, helping with the maintenance and cleanliness of our coast and awareness campaign for all, visitors and residents alike.

So for this to be effective it is important to spread the word, and help by posting/printing this information so we can reach more people and that the important message gets out, it’s about time to be more responsible when one visits the countryside or the beach by cleaning up after each visit.

We thank you in advance and hope you can help to cover the news.
