BANCRUPTCY FORCES SUSPENSION OF WORK ON COLLEGE

According to the headmistress the Ministry of Education of the Government of Andalusia were taken completely by surprised at the bankruptcy

The renovation and expansion of IES ‘Sabinar’ of Roquetas de Mar has been suspended after the company that was awarded the project last year, the Argar Construction Company, last week filed for bankruptcy. As such new term plans made by the oldest and most important educational institute in the municipality, home to hundreds of high school students as well as the evening Baccalaureate Language School, have been thrown into disarray.

María del Mar Aranda, who has been director of the center for eight years, said last week in a statement to the press that “the entire school community is very concerned to see how the issue will be resolved.” She said that the site had already been visited by several technical representatives and it was hoped that the outstanding works could be put out to tender again so that the problem is quickly resolved.

According to the headmistress the Ministry of Education of the Government of Andalusia were taken completely by surprised at the bankruptcy although they confirmed that the situation will not provide any risk to students. “We’re having a bit of bad luck. After it first appeared that the center was going to have this much needed work quickly carried out it will now be necessary to go through the whole tender process again, and that is unlikely to happen much before early October.”

The work, which was included in the Employment Opportunity Plan of Andalusia (OLA), was tendered by Argar at EUR 1,639,839. It focuses on the creation of a new building to house the high school students and the refurbishment of some of the existing modules.

The new building will have nine classrooms, toilets, a technology classroom, and a computer room.
Alfredo Mastronardi, a student at the School of Languages, said that work to enlarge the centre must be carried out as a matter of priority. “The class sizes are currently far too large which does not make for good learning.” Another student, Yolanda Rodriguez, believes that “if there were fewer students in each class we would have more time to talk in English.”
