The Councillor for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, Luis Planas, has issued a statement claiming that the cost of demolishing the now redundant Algarrobico hotel would be around 7 million euro, but this cost should be covered by the developer, not the tax payer.

The councillor is keen to identify and determine responsibility for the costs in the environmental disaster, but the council have vowed to do everything possible to prevent ensure that, “the ones who violated environmental and planning standards”, be held accountable.

Planas pointed out that the Andalusia council recently delivered a report to the Central Government that the figure for demolition of the hotel stood at 3.9 million euro, plus an additional 1.5 million euro for environmental restoration of the area, located in the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata in Níjar.
