Civil Guard officers from the Almeria bomb disposal group (GEDEX), have made safe a German aircraft bomb that was dropped in the area during the Spanish Civil War.
The device was found in a consignment of scrap metal delivered to a recycling company, located in the municipality of Vícar. It was found as plant employees were sorting through and classifying the material.
The immediately alerted the Guardia Civil who dispatched their GEDEX technical staff who carried out deactivation and subsequent destruction.
The Civil Guard is now taking steps to determine the initial location of the device, where they will carry out a search whilst spreading the word amongst the local population.
A spokesman said that should any further similar objects be found they must not be approached or touched and his officers should be called immediately.
He said that Civil Guard officers were able to determine the make of the bomb which they confirmed was of German origin, an SD50 model manufactured in the 1930s.
