VERA FLOOD VICTIM’S FUNDS

The Alcalde of Vera was quick off the mark in opening a flood fund. There has been little publicity to promote it although the account number is prominent on the Council’s website, www.vera.es.

There is no information stating who will decide on possible beneficiaries and no information declaring the fund’s distribution priorities.

It is tempting to think that the establishment of this fund is little more than a ‘politically correct’ gesture.

The Vera branch of the Spanish Red Cross, Cruz Roja has opened an independent, transparent and trustworthy fund to receive donations for victims of the recent floods in Vera.

People can have confidence that their donations will be used to relieve suffering in line with the world renowned policies of the Red Cross. In Vera the upcoming need will be for assistance with rent of temporary accommodation, where mortgage holders have been denied adjustments to their monthly instalments. Some people will also need assistance with materials for renovating their homes and eventually provision of basic furniture and furnishings.

The latter needs can be partially met from the generous donations already received. The Red Cross store now has or will shortly have beds, bedding, some kitchen equipment, crockery and cutlery.

The next couple of weeks will reveal the victims’ needs as their temporary accommodation ceases to be available. Let us be ready to help them. Please donate generously now.
