King Juan Carlos of Spain is “awake and happy”, according to Prince Filipe, after he was operated on again this weekend for spinal stenosis and a hernia, at the Clínica La Milagrosa. Although doing fine, it is not known how long the King will take to recover, although estimates are that he will be resting for between 2 and 6 months. Prince Filipe will take over the King´s agenda during that time.

Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, has come under fire this weekend, after he issued a statement against gay marriage, for the “survival of the species”. Opposition heads and gay rights groups have called for an apology and his resignation, as well as writing to the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, to enforce respect for the laws and constitutional rights of all citizens.

Officers from the National Police have found two men, believed to be Americans, in a house in Albacete. Although initial examinations suggest that both men died as a result of stab wounds, an autopsy will be carried out to ascertain the case of death, as an investigation has been launched.

Emergency service crews have treated two people for carbon monoxide poisoning in the La Manga del Mar Menor area of Cartagena. It is thought the source of the poisoning was a combustion stove in the home located near the local sailing school. Fire crews were evacuating the remaining gas from the premises whilst the two were being treated.

Between January and October 2012, the Spanish airport authority, AENA, recorded 349 cases of pilots having been dazzled by laser pointers whilst flying, an increase of the 326 cases for the whole year of 2011. AENA has established a protocol for dealing with such incidents, including advice for pilots and a process of reporting incidents to security forces to try to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Thieves in Badajoz stole a truck loaded with onions from the Luisi SL company, which was later found, burnt out and ransacked, at the side of a road. An investigation has been launched to try and find those responsible.

The price of butane gas bottles is set to continue to increase for the next few months, with a target of reaching 17.50 euro per refill in May, a figure which will be the ceiling on the price for the future, as part of the government’s plans for “liberalization of the sector”. The ceiling will act as a limiter for the industry, and will mean that increases are absorbed by the company, who can claim back their losses once the wholesale price drops, as there will now be a bi-monthly review of the price, on the second Tuesday of the odd months.

Spain will increase its piped gas export capacity to France from 2015, when the pipeline to the neighbouring country will supply to 7.5 billion cubic meters per year of fuel, which represent an increase of 15%.

Difficulties in Spain and the success of the German labour market has caused an “exodus” of workers seeking opportunities in Germany, which, until December 2012, had seen a total of 50,201 Spanish people securing work for themselves, a 16.7% increase on last year, German authorities said.

Traffic police have charged a 31 year old resident of Vilanova de Bellpuig for speeding, after he was clocked doing more than 120 kilometres per hour on a road with a 50kph limit. The driver had already been reported in December last year for driving at 141 kilometres per hour on a road with a 90kph limit.

Traffic fines can no longer be paid by cash in all Provincial Traffic offices from Monday, although penalties may still be paid by credit card in the DGT headquarters, through the Internet or by phone on the number 060.
