On Saturday 2 March, after several days of torrential rain in the area, nearly 50 members of the Amics del Museu de Xàbia (AMUX) enjoyed warm sunshine for their visit to the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Cotalba, in Alfafuir. This trip re-established a link between the monastery and Xàbia, dating back some 800 years to 1388 as the monastery was originally founded in Xàbia in 1374 on authorisation by Pope Gregory XI.
The next AMUX event will look at more intangible evidence of our history when ,on Friday 15 March, Xàbia residents will have the opportunity to hear Luis Pablo Martinez, an expert in cultural heritage, explain this “intangible cultural heritage” in Spain and how protection of such a valuable asset can be improved.
He has been invited by AMUX, the association of friends of the Xàbia Museum, to discuss the heritage which is more than just the physical buildings and countryside we can see and touch. This treasure is as much present in the sport we traditionally play, in the languages and dialect we learnt as children, in our traditional songs and folk tales and much more, as in our churches, castles and mountain.
Luis Pablo Martinez is an inspector of cultural heritage for the Valencian Community, based in Alicante, and has degrees in history and geography from Valencia University and a master’s degree in European Mediation and Heritage Management. He has co-ordinated a number of successful Spanish projects, including listing the Palm Grove of Elche as a World heritage Site in 2000, the UNESCO nomination of the Mystery Play of Elche (proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001),and the inclusion of the Tribunal de las Aguas de la Vega de Valencia and the Consejo de Hombres Huenos de la Huerta de Mucia , Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009)
Although Spain is a pioneer country in the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, archaeologists and historians are constantly working to produce successful models of protection. Ten years after UNESCO established the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Luis Pablo Martinez will discuss the importance of his work in an illustrated talk in Castellano and English. The talk will begin at 19.00, 15 March, and will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to discuss this fascinating topic informally.
