ALICANTE’S BURIED MOUNTAIN HOUSE

Casa Kanta Reya, a house buried deep in the hills of Alicante, Spain, has been selected as one of the year’s most innovative projects by Genera 2013 – Environment and Energy International Trade Fair.

The house uses natural sources (biomass, solar thermal and photovoltaic, and wind) to provide itself with 100% of its energy needs. And it is the only housing project selected to feature amongst the deluge of engineering and technological works at this year’s fair.

By submerging itself into the landscape, it not only allows its residents to disconnect from life’s stresses, it means the environmentally friendly home has the highest energy rating possible – Type A. Great for the environment, and economical for its owners.

Casa Kanta Reya not only meets its own energy demands, but can also capture the water it needs and manage its waste through the use of renewable energies, natural resources, reuse and recycling. This is possible because 90% of the house is either buried in the hillside or upholstered with indigenous Mediterranean plants and shrubs.

The designers of the project, Estudio 030 said: “Working with nature, and mimicking the surroundings with bio-inspired shapes, completely integrates the house with the environment and the landscape. It’s not just beneficial for the environment, it’s also a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the world.”

Casa Kanta Reya, which is part was funded by the Casas Camaleon enterprise in Alicante, was recently exhibited in Genera 2013, Madrid, alongside the 13 other innovative projects that were selected for this year’s fair.
