Following last week´s article in The Leader about the financial struggles at Torrevieja hospital caused by the huge reduction in “health card” revenue, management at the facility have already started implementing cost cutting activities to try to keep the hospital operating.
For the past two weekends, the hospital has closed its doors on a number of surgical facilities, with the intention of relocating temporary staff to other roles, thus reallocating some funding that could be trimmed off none routine operations.
Union leaders are not happy with the process, as this has not been communicated to them prior to implementation, and they are worried about the long term prospects of their members.
In fact, the hospital themselves are arguing that the move is part of their action plan with the same goal, to reinforce the future of the hospital by trimming waste now, whilst still using as many of their available resources as they can.
Most of the unions have agreed to enter into talks with the hospital management, and are supportive of any agreed moves that can guarantee jobs, but one union, the USAE who represent auxiliary workers, are still refusing to enter into any kind of negotiation.
