The Spanish Navy frigate “Méndez Núñez”, deployed off Somalia in the EU operation against piracy, escorted the Liberian-flagged supertanker “Smyrni” this week, when she was released from captivity after a ten month ordeal. As reported by the Ministry of Defence in a statement, “Méndez Núñez”, the flagship of “Operation Atalanta”, remained in the vicinity of “Smyrni” until a boat from a private security team, the “Condor”’, from which the negotiations were conducted for release, took over the security detail.

Having decommissioned her in June, after 31 years of loyal service monitoring and protecting the countries fishing fleet, the Spanish Navy is offering one of its patrol boats, the “P25 – Grosa”, named after a small island off the Mar Menor, for auction. Currently in the military dock at Las Palmas, the guide price for the “Anaga “ class patrol boat is a mere 27,541 euro, having served some 1,200 sailors, usually 29 at a time, during 3,700 days at sea. However, the bad news is that would-be naval pretenders may be disappointed to find that the ship is to be sold with the intention of breaking her for scrap, rather than a leisurely retirement back at sea, and, if you´re wondering, all weapons are already being stripped before the auction is carried out.
