The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, met with the Japanese Ambassador to Spain, Satoru Satoh, on Wednesday, in Madrid, to discuss possible collaborations in the field of culture and tourism. The meeting stems from the invitation made last week to the Deputy Consul General of Japan, Shigeharu Orihara, during a bonsai exhibition held in Torrevieja, when Orihara was said to be “surprised” by the high quality of the exhibition and multiculturalism exists in the city.

Following the seemingly never ending story of delays in the preparation of the planned exhibition and fiesta site near the Aquopolis water park in Torrevieja, this year´s May Fair, scheduled for the second week of the month, will once again be held near the harbour in the city. Many might question why the proposed site was deemed suitable for last year´s Electromar music festival, numerous concerts, a location for the emergency earthquake evacuation drill and is set to host star of the Spanish equivalent of The Voice, Melendi, with a hopeful audience of 20,000 people at one time, and yet is still not deemed suitable for one of the two reasons the city council were promoting the benefits of the area, as a new home for the market and for fiestas such as the May Fair.

Officers from the local police in Torrevieja are holding a protest rally on Friday, in order to raise awareness of the lack of agreements being reached in the town hall´s insistence in increasing their working hours. In addition to this, the officers are expressing concerns after 24 posts were removed from their team, mostly for covering auxiliary functions such as sick leave, emergencies and as support, as well as recent revelations that the brother of the councillor responsible for the police has received nearly 700,000 euro in contracts for providing private security, often allegedly without authorisation, who were acting in roles which would normally be filled by the police, but at a much lower cost. They are also concerned about the number of evictions they are being called to assist in, which they feel is breaking both the moral and legal promises made in protecting vulnerable citizens.
