Residents of Torrevieja who remember the disagreements between security forces from 2007 may well fear a return to times of uncooperative law enforcers, as stories are starting to come out which highlight problems in both camps.
A complaint has been filed, signed by the councillor for public safety in Torrevieja, Eduardo Gil Rebollo, against two Guardia Civil officers who were allegedly “not fulfilling their tasks”, as they were found sleeping in their patrol car parked not far from the Local Police station in September last year. The incident has been under investigation amidst claims that the officers were elsewhere, witnessed doing other things at the time and complicated by the fact they are said to have been in an “unmarked” car.
A local police officer has had disciplinary proceedings opened by the councillor for public safety in Torrevieja, Eduardo Gil Rebollo, after he was caught carrying his service weapon and ammunition, whilst off duty. This incident dates back to December, when a Guardia Civil patrol stopped a vehicle in Torrevieja, which was being driven by the off-duty cop along with a passenger, and the Guardia Civil officers searched the car thus finding the weapon in the boot.
The Torrevieja telephone saga is still continuing, this time targeting senior members of the police, who are allegedly using their municipal mobile phones for personal calls, or at least they were until February 2012. One person cited used premium rate text services whilst “roaming”, clocking up nearly 200 euro in bills for texting from Mexico, Italy and the UK.
It might also be worth noting that the local police are currently in disagreement with the town hall, partly due to the fact their working hours are being extended, partly due to the removal of a number of jobs and partly due to the private security firms benefitting by contracts given to the companies run by the brother of the councillor in the middle of these reports.
