ALICANTE MOUNTAINEERS RESCUED IN SIERRA NEVADA

Granada’s Guardia Civil rescued a 46 year old mountaineer on Sunday morning who was in a serious condition after he was trapped in the Sierra Nevada following a fall. Later in the same day there was a second rescue, this time involving four climbers on holiday from Alicante.

The first rescue took place at 11.40 hours in an area known as Arroyo Alhorí in Sierra Nevada after a mountaineer fell down an icy slope because of his lack of crampons. He was then unable to climb out of the valley into which he had plunged. A team from the Mountain Rescue Service, together with a Civil Guard helicopter called in from Granada, located the climber who was evacuated to the hospital in Baza, where he was said to be in a serious condition.

The second rescue took place about 18:30 pm on the same day, when four young Alicante climbers called for help after getting lost. A spokesman said that they were not adequately equipped to walk through the snow. When the four were picked up by helicopter they were beginning to suffer from early symptoms of hypothermia. They were found on the summit of del pico Cabañas, in the Sierra de Cazorla (Jaén ), where they were accompanied by three dogs.

The helicopter located them and safely moved them back to to the place that they had left their vehicle earlier in the day.
