Boat Fishing.
‘Pugwash Pete’ managed to get out and caught some good blue mouths, a conger eel and a nice red scorpion fish.

Note: Pete is using a glove because these fish’s stings can be dangerous but maybe not quite so much as the dreaded weaver fish we all hate to catch! Pete caught his fish in 200 feet of water opposite the Repsol Garage on the Garrucha to Mojacar road. Interestingly that’s very shallow for catching blue mouths, minimum 300 feet usually, and maybe they have moved further inshore because of the spring equinox?

Pete catching the conger eel reminded me of a photo I got from ‘Buceo Mojacar’ diving club. I always presumed conger and moray eels wouldn’t get on that well even though they share the same environment and so was quite shocked to see this photo.

‘Orca Steve’ managed to get out on his own for a couple of hours and trolled two lines behind the boat. The first was an 8" blue and yellow rapala chasing blue feathers swimming 3m below the surface on a long line and the second was Steve’s favourite little Devon minnow swimming deep behind a trolling board and again chasing blue feathers. He tried various depths, speeds and areas without a take.

He saw a large (very large) fish break the surface about 500m out from the Repsol garage and about 30m from the boat. Steve doesn’t know what it was but it was large and fast. He thought it was a Dolphin at first but it had no large dorsal fin and he didn’t see it again and come up for air. It also rotated as it broke the surface something dolphins don’t do! (Marlin or swordfish is my guess)

‘Captain Cuba’ is still working on his boat, it’s running now but with a few teething problems! Come on Brian get it fixed we need you out there.

The Carboneras lads are still catching.

My mate Steve who has been away fishing in Panama has been catching loads; obviously the South American countries have not raped their seas like Mediterranean countries have, because they caught a lot of very special fish on the trip including this grouper.

Shore Fishing.
The spring equinox started early for ‘London Bill’ and he’s been catching a lot of dorada bream from Garrucha’s rocks and beach. A little night fishing under the bright lights of the roundabout between the big hotels and the Repsol Garage brought him some more good fish including squid.

He tells me fishing that spot is not for the quick tempered as one has to run the gauntlet a bit what with there being lots of anglers there who think nothing of casting over your lines and dragging your bait in without as much as a sorry. (I did warn him lol)

Coarse Fishing.
This week, again due to inclement weather conditions, the ‘Rods and Reels’ club were at Nancy´s aka Sweetwater. The rain came but only for 15-20 minutes at the start of the day.

That was the good bit, then the wind got up and blew a Hooley, all day! Dave Hoare was pegged by the campsite for those who know the venue and was watching and waiting for the palm trees to end up in the water. Dave Hutchinson although he won the day managed to drop his no 7 section of pole into the flowing water and then waved it goodbye. So if anybody does perchance find a section you will know who it belongs to.
Top Rods on the day

1st Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson fishing the pole using maggot with 18.2/3lbs.
2nd Clive (Golf No More) Cleghorn fishing the pole using maggot with 15.3/4lbs.
3rd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the pole using maggot with 14.3/4lbs.
In spite of the conditions there were only 3 dry nets.

Abbey Angling’s match:
The water had dropped by a foot and there was hardly any flow. Although they are still cutting the bamboos down, there were no reeds floating through this week. After the flush the water has begun fishing better with only the one dry net this week

1st Richard (Fishing again) Kendle with 10lbs fishing the pole using sweet corn.
2nd Stan (The Man) Roberts with 9.1/4lbs fishing pole and feeder using maggot and corn.
3rd Mark (Kens Friend) Harrington with 9lbs fishing Pole using maggot.

Latest license information.
There is now a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing licenses for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. The only loophole left for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Murcia.
