A rescue helicopter from Madrid successfully rescued two climbers, aged 29 and 34, who had built an igloo to survive being stranded in the Peñalara, in the sierra de Guadarrama. However, despite a 12 hour search in icy conditions, they are praising the instant messaging application WhatsApp, after the stranded climbers, with severe hyperthermia, managed to send their coordinates to rescuers simultaneously on their mobile phones, enabling the helicopter to pinpoint their location through the Global Positioning Service, GPS.

Guardia Civil teams rescued three skiers on Monday, all children, who were trapped by an avalanche on the slopes of the winter resort of Formigal in Huesca, one of whom was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Zaragoza. The avalanche occurred at 13:35 on Monday, when the alarm was raised to the emergency services, who immediately implemented the evacuation protocol, resulting in the prompt and effective extraction of those trapped. One of the group, a seven year old girl, remained in a critical condition in hospital, only to die some days later.

A 67 year old woman was killed at the weekend when part of a stage collapsed during a family fun day at the Marina Real in the port de Valencia. A 72 year old man was also injured when a gust of wind caught a lighting rig which fell into the crowd watching a dance show. The woman suffered head injuries and died later in hospital.

A boy of about four years of age died on Monday after being hit by a vehicle in the Murcia town of Molina de Segura. The incident occurred at around 18:20 on Monday after the child was said to have “eluded the supervision of his parents” and was hit by a vehicle. A 14 year old boy was hit by a car whilst riding his push bike on the Tajo Segura service road in Cartagena this week. The emergency services transferred the boy to hospital but there was nothing they could do to save his life.

The emergency coordination centre of Valencia has raised the risk of forest fires to level 3 this week, meaning the entire area is at risk of fires similar to one which caught hold earlier in the week in Barx, near Gandia. It is thought that children playing with fireworks may have caused that blaze, so the emergency services are asking for vigilance from all during this time, ensuring cigarettes are correctly extinguished and rubbish is not left near flammable materials, as well as being observant of factors that may pose a risk to fire.

Catalan police are investigating the discovery of a dead baby at a recycling plant in Sant Adrià de Besòs, near Barcelona, which was found with the umbilical cord still attached and with a deformed skull. The body was found inside a container at the plant and the police are now investigating how it got there, as well as trying to identify the parents of the baby.
