One of the largest crowds seen for many years packed out Torrevieja’s streets last week to celebrate the Semana Santa processions. The Green Machine, better known as Los Costaleros stole the show again, as the 97 strong Cofradia carried the heaviest paso through the streets.

The week was blessed by good weather, and the main procession on Good Friday attracted an estimated 12,000 people. Directly in front of Los Costaleros was the only other large and heavy paso, ‘The Last Supper’, which although carried on Monday, the group decided to push the ‘float’ around on Friday, which helped to keep the procession moving much faster than on Monday.

Now in their ninth year, the International Cofradia carrying the Paso of Nuestro Padre Jesús en la Oración del Huerto de los Olivos (Jesus in the Garden of Olives) still have 15 of the original members carrying among the ranks, with all of them hoping to see out the tenth anniversary, next year. Already special plans and events are underway for the anniversary and hopes are still high that the new Semana Santa Museum will be finished and open for this occasion.

Although only 15 members may still be actively carrying, many others of the original 100, partake in other tasks, such as Joe (the Cat Man ) who is now 86, operates the pole to hoist up telephone and electric cables, Paul Mutter covers their Press and Publicity, Pastor Keith Brown always blesses the cofradia before each carry and others, including the ladies, least we should forget them, help with crowd control, keeping the walkers supplied with sweets and many other duties behind the scenes.

More information on the Semana Santa processions, activities and brotherhoods can be found at www.semanasantatorrevieja.com while photos and short video clips can be located on their dedicated Facebook page. Each year a few of the more mature members hang up their walking shoes and if you are interested in becoming one of the proud band of men known as Los Costaleros, when 2014 rolls around, you will be most welcome to join the ranks of this internationally renowned institution.
