The indigenous population of the province of Alicante is aging at a rate three times faster than the overall increase of the total population of Spaniards, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Between 2007 and 2012, the number of Spanish residents in the Alicante area grew by 2.7%, but of the age group above 65 years, the increase was 9.3%. At present, there are 256,796 Spanish people over the age of 65 in the province, 13.2% of the entire population and 17.5% of all Spaniards, and 23% of the overall none-Spanish residents.

Adding together both the Spanish and none-Spanish people in the age group, there are now a grand total of 365,146 people over the age of 65, which exceeds the number aged 16 years and younger, who total 303,165, for the first time ever.

Apart from a drop in the late 90´s, put down to a reduction in birth rate, under 16´s are still growing in number, but at a slower pace than the more mature population.

However, if you are feeling older than you should and want to mix with a younger crowd, Mutxamel might be the place to consider, as they have one of the lowest percentages of over 65´s in the area, with just 11.31% of the population exceeding that age. It is a similar situation in San Vicente del Raspeig, with 12.56% of the residents of Spanish nationality, as well as Petrer, with only 13.5% of the residents of Spanish nationals over 65 years.

On the opposite scale, it might be that you want to mix with those of a more mature and wiser life, in which case top of the towns for your visiting book ought to be Elda, where almost 19% of Spanish residents are over 65 years of age, but even higher is Alcoy, which reached 20.28%, but there are said to be differences due to overall population numbers which may give an unfair opinion on the statistics.
