You may recall a number of articles last year, in which countless drivers were confused over the adoption of new parking bays on the main streets through Torrevieja, confusion which still continues today with residents unsure of the law and the police unable to monitor some of the time restrictive spaces, but confusion may well have also spread into the peripheries of the city, if reports over a recent incident are anything to go by.

It was revealed this week that on the afternoon of the 27th of March, officers from the Local Police of Torrevieja observed a vehicle parked in a loading and unloading bay on Calle San Isidro in La Mata, where it remained for at least 3 hours during the evening, and subsequently issued a notice of a fine of 90 euro for parking in an unauthorized spot, although this can be reduced to 45 euro in the event of prompt payment.

Perhaps not a normal news worthy story until it later transpired that the vehicle belonged to the Torrevieja councillor for public safety, and responsible for the police, Eduardo Gil Rebollo.

Neighbours had already noted that the vehicle carried an official sticker in the windscreen stating that it was a car belonging to an official, but it was also pointed out that the authority does not allow anybody to break the law, and the vehicle was still parked illegally, as per the signs that were clear for all to see.

Apart from being named in a number of allegations relating to the awards of contracts and the mobile phone scandal that rocked Torrevieja, for which Gil Rebollo was one of the few left unpunished, he has recently hit the headlines for falling out with the police over new working shift patterns and pay.

Unions representing the police are also now raising questions as to why the parking restriction signs on the street in question have been changed, some two days after the offence was recorded, which now allows him to park in the bay when he is at home, and effectively changes the law to suit him and his personal parking requirements. It is also believed that the fine has not been paid.

This is yet another incident that fuels the fire in calls for the councillor to resign from his post, but, if history tells us anything, it is unlikely that this latest incident will damage him or his position, but at the detriment to the mayor who still seems unable or unwilling to take action against a councillor who has been in place since the leadership of the former mayor of the city.
