Police officers who were called to attend an incident in Madrid in the early hours of Wednesday morning, made the gruesome discovery of a couple lay in the same bed, who had apparently died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head.
The scene showed apparent signs that the 75 year old man had first shot his 68 year old wife in the head, and then turned the firearm on himself. However, upon closer inspection, the officers discovered that the man was still alive and his apparent suicide attempt had failed. He later admitted the facts to investigating officers.
The case is being investigated as one of domestic violence, which is now the fourth such case recorded in the Capital, the most recent one before this being only last weekend, when an Angolan born woman was stabbed by her husband.
None of the four cases recorded in Madrid have had previous complaints of mistreatment or a restraining order. In fact, across Spain, thirteen of the sixteen deaths attributed to domestic violence have registered no previous complaints against their partners, according to a statement by the Minister for Health and Equality, Ana Mato. The Minister has therefore encouraged women who are victims of male violence to report their situation to the free 016 helpline, so that they can be protected.
