Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions.

The Green Shoots of Recovery?

The global economic crisis has been lingering around now ‘like a bad smell’ for too many years to mention so at last it is good to be able to give you some positive golfing news for a change. The golf bookings in this area for the month of April are in excess of 20% higher than the same time last year and obtaining tee times has been very much a juggling act for golfers, agents and golf courses.

I know that Scandinavian golfers have flooded the region and many UK golfers have just taken any opportunity to find some sun and play golf never the less this is still good news for many types of local businesses. However there is a dark cloud on the horizon because greedy hoteliers have lobbied the government to stop the short term private letting of properties by their owners.

Now I have lived here for more than 9 years and can count the number of Torrevieja hotels on one hand so just where are all the golfers to stay when visiting the area? Many people were sold their ‘place in the sun’ on the basis that short term rentals would help to offset the annual running costs of the property only to now be told this could now be classed as illegal.

Only in Spain could this type of thing repeatedly happen and our hosts really know how to shoot themselves in the foot on occasions. I guess that this will just force people to rent properties on a black money basis and then the authorities receive no taxes and payments so who really wins here?

We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.
