Cruz Roja to benefit from a unique, international concert.

Two of Torrevieja’s established choral groups will be joining forces this month to offer a unique, charity concert despite the fact that the choristers speak different languages! Whilst “CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR” is made up of English speaking residents of different nationalities, the choristers of local, Spanish choir, “MASA CORAL JOSÉ HODAR” are Spanish speakers. The combination of their distinct types of music on in the same concert promises to make this ‘one off’ event even more special and should prove attractive to a mixed-nationality audience representative of cosmopolitan Torrevieja.

“MASA CORAL JOSÉ HODAR” is actually one of Torrevieja’s longest established choirs in a town whose cultural roots are firmly set in choral singing. Back in 1955, the ‘La Schubertina’ choir was formed from local choristers in order to participate in the very first Habaneras competition, that which is today, the ‘Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia’, now one of the world’s most prestigious choral competitions. The founding musical director of the choir was Don. José Hodar. After many successes in concerts throughout the province and further afield, the choir eventually disbanded until 2004. This year represented the 50th anniversary of the now prestigious and international competition and in order to celebrate the occasion, the choir was re-formed. Under the baton of current M.D, the talented and young musician and trumpeter, Miguel Guerrero, the choir took its name in honour of their founder, José Hodár. Torrevieja born Miguel Guerrero commenced his musical studies with town band ‘Union Musical Torrevejense’ and still plays trumpet with this award-winning band. Later, he continued his musical studies at the Superior Music Conservatory ‘Oscar Esplá’ in Alicante. Fronting other torrevjense choirs, he has conducted in prestigious venues throughout the length and breadth of the Spanish mainland as well as further afield. In 2009, he directed the music of the ‘José Hodar’s’ first recording when the choir was accompanied by the U.M.T band and in 2011, Miguel was voted ‘best director’ in the prestigious “Cantus M.M.” music festival in Austria and was invited to conduct over 500 choristers in a special concert in Salzburg cathedral. MASA CORAL JOSÉ HODAR, with their repertoire of typical, torrevejense Habaneras songs, have performed on stages throughout Spain and have been seen on television channels such as Televisión Torrevieja, Canal 9, Televisión Vega Baja and even national channels such as Antena 3 or RTVE.

“CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR”, another a well-established torrevejense mixed choir, is made up of around fifty choristers. Formed back in 2004 as the result of an idea by chorister, Mary Priddle, the founding musical director was Chas Smith (who also directed the Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers). Since 2011, CRESCENDO has further extended its repertoire and style under the baton of Murcian musician, Irene Oliva. The majority of the choristers are residents of the ‘city of salt’ and surrounding area, mostly retired and who represent various nationalities such as British, Dutch, German and others. Crescendo’s extensive repertoire includes various styles of music from distinct eras, songs from the shows, musicals and films through to popular themes and ‘gospel’ songs. The choir is accompanied on piano by José Alberto Morales. ‘Crescendo International choir’ has performed throughout the province of Alicante and has assisted in raising substantial and much-needed funds for local charities such as Cruz Roja, Carítas, Help or APANEE.
