The beaches of the Orihuela Costa will play host for up to 300 athletes on Sunday the 19th of May, as Club Triatlon Tragamillas will be holding a Triathlon event for the first time on the coast.

Starting at 10:30 on Sunday morning, the racers will endure a 750 metre swim off the coast of La Glea, before returning to land and being doused with a water fountain, so as not to spread sand on the roadways, mounting their bikes at the transition point of calle Ramla, they will then cycle for a further 20 kilometres, before taking up the third and final discipline of a 5 kilometre run.

Separated into seven different age groups for both male and female contestants, there will be a cash prize for the first five overall winners, as well as prizes for first, second and third in each of the 14 categories.

Submission of entries is open now, with around 150 of the maximum 300 places being snapped up straight away, and can be done via the website of the association, www.tragamillas.org, or at the Decathlon stores, who have become a retail partner of the event, the time limit being placed on entry being Wednesday the 15th of May, or when all 300 places have been allocated, whichever is sooner.

This is the first time that this particular group have come to the Orihuela Costa. Last year a similar race was held in Torremendo, but unseasonably cold weather resulted in the water based activity being cancelled.

Although the first time on the coast, it is hoped that it will not be the last, with organisers excited about the prospect, and the Councillor for the coast, Matina Scheurer, saying that she hopes it will be a “good event, and we are very happy to have it here for the first time”, during a press conference launching the initiative.

The town hall are supporting the event by providing all of the necessary safety and security staff, toilets and crowd safety facilities, as well as providing maintenance technicians who will be examining and repairing the roads in the area prior to the event taking place.

With just 30 events of this kind occurring across Valencia each year, the addition of the Orihuela Costa into this calendar of events is set to be yet another reason to fly the flag of the facilities and abilities, as well as the sporting and cultural diversities that the coastal area has to offer.
