‘BOGUS’ GAS MEN AND ‘WINDOWS’ SCAM

Neighborhood Watch are still having reports of scams occurring in the area.

The “Bogus” gas men have for a little while been telephoning people at their homes telling them that the service and documentation of their systems is out of date and they must arrange an appointment to put this right. In most cases this is not true and when they arrive they charge extortionate amounts. However, most of them are legally licensed but it is best to decline their invitation.

If the documentation is in fact out of date it is best to contact the local Respol or Cepsa agents. If they are out of date and an accident occurs, then house insurance will probably not cover any claim

The “Windows” scam has been around for some time. They telephone you stating that they represent Microsoft Windows and are contacting you because you have a problem with your computer which is also affecting other computers. They will talk you through what you have to do to put this right but afterwards there is a high charge for doing this. You later find that your computer does not work and you have to obtain the help of a computer engineer to put it right. The amount that you have paid on your card has been withdrawn from your bank account. They have probably given you a telephone number to contact them and say that they are based at Liverpool. Merseyside Police know about their activities but say that with modern technology although the telephone number is located in that city, the call could have come from anywhere in the world. In fact the caller has been traced to Egypt. Last week one was received from Columbia, South America. If calls are received, terminate them at once.
