The Vega Baja hospital has received another addition to its trophy cabinet, this time with an award of distinction from the Spanish pharmaceutical association, the Asociación Española de Derecho Farmacéutico, or Asedef. The award is for managing efficiency and cost effectiveness, without sacrificing quality and care, and is awarded to hospitals with “excellent” quality standards.

Pharmacies across the Valencia region have warned that drug stocks may soon dry up, due to more delays in receiving payment from the government. The outstanding debt is now around 500 million euro after the 85 million euro drug bill for February, due to be paid by the end of April, was delayed. In a meeting between pharmacists and government officials the minister for health, Manuel Llombart, pledged to pay half by the 15th of May, the second half by the end of this month, in addition to arrears from September, October and November.

According to Doctor Nekane Murga, a cardiologist at the Hospital Universitario de Basurto near Bilbao, more people under the age of 65 die from cardiovascular disease and heart failure, than cancer, AIDS and road traffic accidents combined. The Doctor made the announcement as part of a campaign to encourage a healthier lifestyle, such as eating healthy foods (fruits, vegetables and fish etc), physical exercise and not smoking, as “people should be aware that the primary responsibility for their health is theirs, and this awareness begins when shopping at the supermarket”.

After carrying out research on public telephone in Madrid, it has been announced that scientists have found the presence of bacterial species in 40 different areas of the capital; they found that 95% of these devices were contaminated with some kind of microorganism and up to 30% had traces of faecal matter. The telephones were located in 10 hotels of four and five star rating, three in public telephone booths, 10 phones located in Atocha train station, 10 public telephones located in Terminal T4 of Barajas Airport and 10 public telephone booths located in different streets of Madrid. In total, there were 130 samples collected and analysed in three different laboratories specialized in microbiology and environmental quality. In case you want to do your own research as to the effects of coming into contact with their findings, analyses revealed that the most common bacteria was “aerobic mesophilic”, present in 76%, followed by “Staphylococcus aureus” and “Estafilocuccus Epidermis” on 60%, and the “Enterobacteriaceae” and “Escherichia coli” was found on 30%.

Torrevieja hospital has welcomed its first resident nurse midwife, Lucía Espinosa Barrajón, the first Matron to take over the specialist care of Obstetric Gynaecology. With the intention of improving quality and care, this is seen as the next step in marking a place in the standards of health received in the area, with the additional benefits of ensuring training provisions are met to meet the needs of an international medical facility.
