Bike-safe crash barriers

It is inevitable that a Capital city would lead the way in futuristic developments, and this time it is one of benefit wherever the initiative may have begun, but particularly in places of higher concentrations of traffic, so Madrid will be the first Spanish community that will have a comprehensive protection barriers for motorcyclists on all 2,600 kilometres of roads, which will extend the current 400 kilometres of coverage for completion by 2015.

The president of the Community of Madrid, Ignacio González, has made the announcement at the Real Casa de Correos in the Puerta del Sol, where a reception was being held this week for the first Spanish biker who has been around the world and the first woman to enter the Madrid government headquarters riding her bike.

In the last four years, the government team have been placing the protective barriers on both main and secondary roads, with a focus on areas identified as either actual or potential accident black spots. The regional government has allocated more than 80 million euro to the project over the past few years, that has reduced fatal traffic accidents in the region by 74% in the last ten years .With respect to bikers, during the same period there has been an 80% drop in fatal road accidents.

The measures being implemented are a government initiative, but have been consulted through talks with members of professional associations. The barriers being placed are considered to be the safest in the world.
