The judge investigating the mobile phone scandal that rocked Torrevieja council, Monserrate Mula Igualada, has sent a second request for information relating to the use of mobile phones by council officials, after the first official request, sent about a month ago addressed to Mayor Eduardo Dolón, has so far been ignored.

The court has asked for all of the information on mobile phone use to investigate whether there was an alleged embezzlement by public officials and municipal workers when using this service, paid for by the local public treasury, and used for allegedly phoning prostitutes, subscribing to “adult” film channels, playing TV quizzes, clocking up excessive “roaming” charges and using other premium rate services. As previously reported the case saw the high profile resignation of the councilor for Sport, Daniel Plaza, and various reshuffles of others involved.

The judge has specifically asked the City Council to indicate whether, at the public´s expense, these allegations of use are true and, if that is the case, provide all relevant data of the users and companies, the number of terminals hired, what people were assigned to what phone and the position held by these people at the time the phones under their charge were used.

At the same time, the court also requested the information from the telecom provider Vodafone, who are said to have complied fully. It was also revealed during the investigation that Vodafone were awarded the contract for Torrevieja´s mobile phones but the provision of the service had never been put to tender, nor had it been supported by a contract for the last 13 years that they have been providing the service, a situation which is also under investigation.
