The two none elected members of Torrevieja council, José Riera and Antonio Boix, have announced their resignation from their posts today, pending the recent ruling that the practice of filling posts with people who have not been selected through the democratic process is illegal, according to a case found before the Constitutional Court.
The move is said to be a “personal decision”, as the ruling is yet to be formally passed, and is “for the good of the city of Torrevieja and the work of the government team”, and that they have exercised “responsibility” in rejecting any possibility of being relocated as advisors.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, will carry out a reshuffle of government to award the departments of Urban and New Technologies to other existing, elected members of the government.
Other councils are still waiting on the publication of the ruling, which will force all none elected members who are holding positions of councillors to cease work immediately. Currently, this affects two posts at Orihuela and one in Elche around the Vega Baja area.
