ORIHUELA SHOPS CAN OPEN ON SUNDAY

During their regular session of council, the local governing board of Orihuela and approved the declaration that Orihuela Costa is of particular interest as a tourist destination, and have therefore approved the liberalisation of shop opening hours, which means that shops and businesses will be allowed to open on Sundays and public holidays.

The announcement was made by the government spokesperson, Antonia Moreno, despite widespread condemnation of the move from numerous business groups, who fear that allowing the Zenia Boulevard to open on Sundays, more than it is already permitted, will strangle local businesses even more.

As reported last week, more than a dozen Federations, Confederations, Unions and Associations of merchants throughout the Vega Baja district, including Orihuela and Torrevieja, signed a manifesto against the municipal government´s plans, a message which has been ignored by the council.

The representatives of small and medium business argued that the total liberation of times would cause serious harm to the commercial structure of the region, as small businesses support 97% of the economy in Spain whilst clarifying that they are not against shopping centres, but the unfairness of the administration established between them. Commercial establishments can open 90 hours a week, eleven Sundays and holidays this year, over the Easter holidays and summer period, which the traders consider is enough to satisfy the tourism needs during the peak times.
