EDUCATION CUTS KEEP ON COMING

The Councillor for Education in the Orihuela municipality, Rosa Martínez, has announced the cuts to education being forced upon the area by the authorities in Valencia for the next academic year, with 13 teaching posts being slashed, this on top of the 23 already lost last year, meaning a total of 36 teachers being axed in two years, as well as another 6 classes being dropped, again on top of the 13 that were eliminated last year, totalling 19 units from two academic courses being removed.

Of the six classes being removed, Villar Palasí and Manjón will lose one each, as well as two in the Virgen de Desamparados, one in Nuestra Señora de Belén and another in Los Dolses. Martínez stated that the local education board have been arguing against these cuts, but this has been unsuccessful, given the “geographical mobility of students this year that can be derived from the creation of the single district school in the township”.

The enrolment period will concluded this week and the statistics and applications will then be collated, but the councillor has warned that the consequence of sending three zones to a single district may be that “some centres are empty and others have greater demand than they can absorb”.

Rosa Martínez has also stated that she feels that these cuts will result in a “significant reduction in the quality of teaching in primary education, a fundamental stage in which school is the future of students” , and has warned of the economic difficulties being experienced by the company contracted to provide the school buses, as well as those operating school canteens, who are “in serious trouble for debts accumulated with the regional administration”. In one school in Orihuela alone, the debt to a company serving food there stands at 130,000 euro, according to the councillor.

However, there is some good news for infants, as registration has already opened for those children aged between 0 and 3 years in the municipality, where there are now 61 vacancies in the coastal region, 29 in La Murada, 56 in El Palmeral, and 25 in Virgen de Monserrate, although all these places are spread amongst the age groups, so early application is recommended.
