On the 29th April members met and enjoyed a friendly get together and to listen to a well delivered talk given by Dawn Perrier who works for the Mary Rose Trust.

Dawn is herself a diver who brought up many artifacts before the wreck was raised; quite an achievement. The many slides Dawn showed us brought to life the extraordinary story which unfolded in front of us.

Dawn kept us enthralled with the history and adventure of the Mary Rose which was built in Portsmouth in 1512 for King Henry VIII’s tudor navy. The ship was sunk while leading an attack on the galleys of a French invasion fleet, actually close to Portsmouth harbour in the Solent. 200 sailors, 185 soldiers and 30 gunners perished when she sank in 1545. Some believe that a powerful gust of wind caught the ship broadside and she just keeled over. Some believe that she may have been overloaded with guns and men. Was it badly designed? These questions are still something to ponder over.

It was not possible to raise the Mary Rose complete because of length of time it had lain waterlogged on the sea bed. 20,000 artifacts including canons, contents from the barber surgeon’s chest, canisters, gold coins, cooking pots and metal plates. Skeletons and bones were raised and buried in Portsmouth. A museum in Portsmouth will house very many items for public viewing. At the meeting Dawn handed us some of the smaller items, beautifully restored, to touch and see, (not the gold coins though)! The contents of the barber surgeon’s chest would have been interesting! We were honoured to host Dawn’s extremely interesting talk and she certainly held us in rapt attention.

Our next meeting on the 27th May features a guest speaker who has been asked back for a repeat talk because of the interest generated last time. Vivien Heywood is an expert on Victorian costume. She has been a bobbin lace maker for over thirty years who expanded into Victorian clothes and now has an extensive collection. An added bonus is that we get to model many of them!

New members and visitors are always welcome. Don’t forget we meet at the CMO building on the road behind Carrefour super store, Torrevieja where there is plenty of parking. The meetings are on the last Monday of the month and begin at 10,30am with entry from 10am. For further information please visit our web site www.torreviejau3a.org
