THE 113th U.S. OPEN commences on June 13th on the East Course at the Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania. It will be the fifth U.S. Open played on the course. Lee Trevino won the title there in 1971. Australian David Graham won in 1981 hitting every fairway and green.

Being an old course, the East is quite short at 6,996 yds and par 70. Keeping the ball on the fairway and hitting a high percentage of the small greens will decide the winner at Merion, where the rough is like a jungle.

The Merion Golf Club dates from 1896, and is one of the shrines of American golf. The floorboards of the venerable clubhouse creak underfoot. Designed by Scottish immigrant Hugh Wilson in 1910, the East course has many features derived from famous British courses. Fourteen year old Bobby Jones played here in 1916.

Strict rules apply; no electronic devices, no rangefinders, no mobile phones. This is actually welcomed by the members, who can tell the office: “I’m going to Merion, you won’t be able to reach me.” It could be the most peaceful U.S. Open for a long time. Unless Garcia is paired with Woods. In that case, if you believe the press, it will be Gunfight at the East Course Corrall.

His lawyer states: “As a direct result of the PGA Tour’s actions Singh has been exposed to public humiliation and ridicule; shamed, scorned and emotionally distraught.” (Breaks out an onion.)
