Beautiful Roses in Bloom.
Roses were the main theme of the May meeting of the Vega Baja Garden Club. Ron Harris, a Club Member, has been drawn to roses since he was seven years old! He asked his father to buy him a beautiful rose called “Iceberg” when it was first introduced; he was 8 years old at the time.

He first exhibited at the tender age of 10, was enrolled in the National Rose Society when he was 11, and has now been a member for 52 years! He has lived in Spain for the last 13 years and his love of roses continues unabated.

Ron’s fascinating talk was on the subject of the development of the rose over the last 60 years. He explained that during the 1950’s a rose called “Peace” was hugely popular, it was very widely grown in England, and remains a firm favourite. During the 1960’s a growth of interest in rose growing resulted in a blossoming of Rose Societies.

Many new varieties were produced, amongst them “Blue Moon”, one of the first mauve roses. The 1970’s saw the rise in popularity of floribunda and miniature roses. In the 1980’s large chains of DIY stores introduced pot grown roses, which were available all year round.

Gardening styles began to change over the next two decades; modern roses were crossed with older varieties to enhance perfume and to provide a variety of planting situations. There are now patio roses, dwarf floribundas, climbing roses and others able to offer ground cover. Ron concluded by offering invaluable advice as to how to care for and plant a pot grown rose.

The annual rose competitions were judged, Tom Gardin won the prize for the most fragrant single bloom, and Val Duckworth won the prize for the best bowl of roses.

Anna van Dijk then spoke about the grafting of vines. Her talk was followed by the usual raffle of plants and a general question and answer session. Ron Harris gave individual advice to club members who had questions as to which rose would best suit their needs.

The next meeting will be held on Monday 3rd June, at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start, at Los Rosales Restaurant on the CV895 Lemon Tree Road, Campo de Guardamar.

There will be a competition for the best vase of different flowers from members’ gardens, terraces or balconies, and also a talk from David Stokes, a professional photographer, of Photogenics Costa Blanca on the subject of how best to photograph plants and gardens.
