The publishing of accounts relating to this year´s May Fair in Torrevieja, reveal that is has been the most austere in the 25 year history of the event, and has only cost the residents of the city 51,000 euro to put on.
Breaking down the figures, we can see exactly where our money has been spent. The hiring of three electricity generators for 5 days cost 13,975 euro. The company Acciona cleaned and prepared the port area at a cost of 7,741 euro. The lighting, rigs, wiring and installations required for the illuminations cost us 18,410 euro.
The town hall also provided additional police for the event, but this was supplemented by 6,534 euro worth of private security guards, provided by the company Defcom Seguridad, which is run by the brother of the councillor for security, Eduardo Gil Rebollo.
These are not the only costs of course, the private entity, Asociación de Amigos de la Feria de Mayo, paid the largest amount of the bill, here we are just looking at the contributions that the tax payers have made.
There is a little good news though, the association decided not to spend the usual 10,000 euro grant from the town hall on big acts this year, so that also made us a saving. Instead, the city coffers handed over 4,000 euro for hiring guitarist Antonio Fernández, otherwise known as “El Torero”, and another 1,000 euro for Jonathan Pons, but as he is a local Spanish singer, his travelling expenses are probably lower. Ernesto Huesca, the producer who provided these acts, had faced criticism before over profiteering from both ticket sales and from the town hall budget for previous events in Torrevieja.
We also found a little more information about the last minute cancellation of the bull fight and horse show during the May Fair. Information released this week reveals that the move was as the result of a complaint to the Conselleria de Gobernación by an Alicante businessman, Miguel Antonio Sellés, who had urged an inspection of the temporary facility as it been previously dismantled in other municipalities on account of it failing to comply with the rules and regulations relating to the purpose of use.
Questions were also raised against the Torrevieja town hall who were asked to perform the technical inspection of the facility, but there were apparent discrepancies and confusion over the complaint.
Incidentally, the businessman who first raised the concern operates his own company that hires bull rings, and has done since 1984.
