A renowned unpleasant and unwelcome “Portuguese” visitor was seen on the Los Náufragos beach of Torrevieja this week, although it wasn´t of a human kind, but rather the dreaded Portuguese Man of War.

Similar in looks to a jellyfish, the sea creatures have been known to cause considerable pain through stings, very painful to the recipient and usually requiring medical assistance.

Environmental watchdogs launched a search for more specimens, after the lone attacker was washed up on the beach, but couldn´t find any others at the time.

Local biologist Juan Antonio Pujol, said that the creature “is dangerous as their sting is very painful and recommended that those who suffer receive medical care as a precaution”, but they are considered quite rare in the waters of the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor.
