The risk of distracted driving is real and in 2011 it alone resulted in 32,497 incidents, 39% of the total, in which the distraction appeared as a contributing factor and in which 904 people and 4,590 other people were seriously injured, according to a report from the DGT traffic department.

As a result, the Guardia Civil, with the collaboration of the local and regional police forces, are intensifying monitoring and surveillance of drivers, looking specifically for causes of distraction, including the use of a mobile phone or GPS navigators, which can result in a 200 euro fine, 3 penalty points and, according to the statistics, death.

They also see fatigue as a contributing factor to distraction related incidents, and smoking. They are advising against smoking whilst driving, as it increases the chances of being involved in an accident by 1.5 times.

To avoid risks associated with fatigue, the DGT recommends that before driving, you sleep well, do not drink alcohol or eat large meals, check prescription drugs, stopping every two hours on long trips and maintaining a pleasant temperature inside the vehicle. As well as not smoking and preparing for the journey, they also say that you should only use your phone for emergencies and with the car stopped off the road.

The slogan that accompanies this campaign translates nicely to “If you drive distracted, there are many things you cannot see”, which will be accompanied by an extensive awareness campaign in addition to the sanctions.
