CARTAGENA TO CELEBRATE PERAL’S 125TH ANNIVERSARY

On the 20th of September, 1884, Lieutenant Isaac Peral, born in Cartagena in June, 1851, wrote a paper on the original concept of a submersible torpedo boat. That concept was to change the nautical futures, as on the 8th of September, 1888, the submarine Peral was launched.

Carrying out various tasks and trials, Peral was lucky enough to have taken to the sea just days before the French launched a similar project, the Gymnote, therefore winning the accolade of being the first ever submarine to be launched, although not actually submerging until the 7th of August, 1889.

The naval town of Cartagena is still very much involved in submarines to this day, although the launch of the latest ship has been delayed, the shipyards will soon be taking on a massive project of renewing the hulls of one of the remaining submarines in the Spanish fleet.

But, in September of this year, marking the 125 anniversary of the launch of Peral, Cartagena is planning a series of events, celebrations and lectures to pay tribute to both the legendary submarine, and the man behind it.

Although the monument to the original ship, with her restored hull, stood on display for many years on the coastline of the harbour, it was recently removed to a safer and more permanent position, albeit out of sight.

But there is no question of the pride that Cartagena feels for both the ship that took his name, and the inventor himself, so the 125th anniversary is sure to be one for noting in the diary of any military and navy history fan.
