As discussions get under way on the development of a waste management plan for the coast a number of municipalities have shown interest in hosting the proposed facility but first, they say, they want to know what benefits any new plant will generate and the number of jobs it will create.
In recent weeks it would appear that several municipalities in the region have opened a round of contacts with the Consorcio de Residuos de la Zona XVII Waste Consortium to determine how and where the plant could be built as well as any economic benefits they might receive with the development of this facility.
Provincial sources say that the contacts have only been ‘initial’ and although any contract will be awarded for up to two decades it is not yet possible to provide any indication of where the plant will be sited.
In fact, the power to decide where to build this facility lies solely with the Generalitat. However the Consortium will act as executor and should there be more than one municipality wishing to build the plant, its construction will be awarded by public tender.
The Cojense City Council has removed the rubbish bags that have been hanging in some streets in protest at the new plant being sited in the area. They say that it makes no sense to keep them on display because no transfer plant will be located in the municipality. However, the residents of the town will continue with their demonstrations with the next one taking place this coming Sunday
