Austrian Maria Steinmayr had a lucky escape on Friday after she jumped from the roof of the Hotel Bali in Benidorm.

However, it wasn´t a suicide attempt or an accident that she jumped as Maria was one of seventeen contestants in the World Championship Extreme Base Jumping competition, which sees daredevils annually jump from the building.

The jump wasn´t supposed to be as near death experience as it came though as, when her parachute opened, it failed to fully extract and was “upside down”, leaving her plummeting towards the ground 160 metres below at a speed of up to 100 kilometres per hour.

By a twist of luck, fate and good fortune, Maria´s hurtling body was forced towards the side of the building, resulting in her landing on the balcony of a tenth floor hotel room, much to the surprise of everybody watching.

Even more astonishing is the fact that Maria only suffered bruises to her elbows, knees and the nasal septum, although the accident has resulted in her withdrawal from the competition.
