A group of students of the University Miguel Hernández in Elche have developed a robot that is programmed to perform the work of guide dog.

Nicknamed “dogUMH”, the robot is capable of detecting inclines and obstructions and can navigate the environment with its omnidirectional mobile platform and a robotic arm that indicates the direction in which to walk.

DogUMH is able to recognize objects in the environment, and even pick them up, as well as holding a stick which can control the force that indicates the direction to be followed.

The project involved 16 students of Industrial Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering and Industrial Electronics and Automation, coordinated by professors at the Polytechnic School.

The group now intend to continue developing the robot, giving it new features and testing it on real blind and partially sighted humans.
