The Prince of Asturias, Felipe de Borbón y Grecia, will join the President of the government, Mariano Rajoy, the President of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, and an entourage of dignitaries at the inaugural ceremony of the new AVE, High Speed Train, from Madrid to Alicante on Monday the 17th of June.
Leaving Madrid at 10:05, with a couple of scheduled stops for official calls, the 12:40 arrival into Alicante is the start of a new era in train travel. There will be an official ceremony, with speeches, before the VIP´s return to Madrid.
Spanish rail operator, RENFE, sold a staggering 15,873 tickets for travel on the first day of the service, five times the normal number of 3,258 seats booked for conventional rail services on the same day last year, increasing to 25,000 by day two, with almost all seats for the Friday and Saturday services being sold out by Thursday, via their ticket offices and website.
The official opening of this new link AVE will be on Tuesday the 18th of June, with a two hour and twenty minute standard journey time.
The Valencia president announced today that there are already 6,000 seats on offer for every day on this prestigious service, covering nine trains each way, with an additional service on Friday, with special offers also available through the RENFE website.
The actual trains assigned to the service are the S-112 and S-100 high speed vehicles, the most technologically advanced trains of their class, capable of reaching up to 300 kilometres per hour. The S-112, built by Talgo-Bombardier, has 365 seats, whereas the S-100, manufactured by Alstom, has 332 seats, fully accessible to those passengers in wheelchairs or with mobility problems, separated into three “classes” of travel, Preferente, Turista Plus and Turista. All seats have a 220 volt electrical connection, folding footrests and tables, individual reading lights, and audio and video channels for on board entertainment.
