A luxury yacht sliced the fibre optic cable between the islands of Ibiza and Formentera today, cutting the ADSL and telephone connection for 2,600 people, according to Telefónica.
The incident happened in the early hours of Monday morning, when the boat cut through the cable some 1,640 metres off the coast of Es Cudels.
The telephone company managed to restore voice services through their backup radio network, but the internet connection will require underwater work to repair the cables. They will be installing temporary repairs until the full service can be restored, which may take days to weeks, depending on the assessment once the repair ships arrive at the scene.
