If you happen to be in a relationship, in love, with a significant other, spare a moment’s thought for the poor, lonely people of the northern Spanish city of Bilbao. According to a survey released this week, 38% of all Spaniards consider Bilbao to be the hardest place in the country to “hook up”.

Although the Basques themselves were the most critical in their responses, with 55% saying that Bilbao residents are the “least attractive”, as is the town, a view shared by other regions on a slightly lesser scale.

The survey of more than 2,000 young people between 16 and 31 years of age was conducted around the larger cities of the country, with Barcelona people being considered the easiest, in the sense of finding a partner.

But Madrid came out overall top of the leader board, especially by people of Madrid, but this view was also shared by neighbouring Castilia La Mancha, with 56.4% of those asked saying that Madrid is the city where it is easier to meet up, followed by Murcia at 46.7%, La Rioja at 44% and Cantabria at 43%.

Nayara Manero, an expert on Sexual Education and Sexology, points out that various factors can influence the way we relate to other people, “The climate, the leisure, which we are accustomed to meet new people, and Madrid and Barcelona are very cosmopolitan and this opportunity will not give the same results as other cities”.

“On the other hand, in small towns, young people lose the anonymity offered by large cities and with that, inhibitions are stronger when meeting new people”.
