The Director General of Traffic, María Seguí, has said this week that three stretches of motorway have already been identified as qualifying for the forthcoming increase in the maximum permitted speed to 130 kilometres per hour. Having confirmed this number, she also stated that there are more being assessed, but refused to elaborate until such a time as the draft law regulating speed is approved.

The DGT also stated that the proposal for the mandatory wearing of crash helmets in city centres by cyclists still stands, but the public consultation and discussion has been a good move. Meanwhile, some of those opposing the notion are now asking for an addition to the road traffic act, asking that pedestrians should be forced to wear helmets too, as the importance of their safety mustn´t be overlooked, if cyclists are being forced to wear helmets despite their evidence on the safety impact not corroborating that provided by the government on the lifesaving benefits.

Highway Safety Attorney, Bartolomé Vargas, has advocated road safety being included as a mandatory subject under the proposed LOMCE education reforms, or Wert´s Law as it is nicknamed after the education minister, which is currently under consideration by Congress after the proposals were withdrawn some months ago in the midst of protests. The Director General of Traffic, María Seguí, has offered her support, although she has shed doubt on whether it should be a specific subject or content within existing sections.

The European Consumer Centre in Spain, under the National Consumer Institute, has filed report on possible abusive or unfair clauses in contracts from Spanish car rental companies, identifying four practices that may violate the economic interests of customers. The fuel policy, the final price of the reservation booked online, clauses providing services after the return of the vehicle and payment limitations, such as only accepting credit cards, are some of the irregularities identified.
